Ebook About From the country’s foremost expert on “cold feet,” a smart and compassionate guide for the bride-to-be who thinks she should be blissfully happy—but is freaking out insteadFor most brides, the elation of engagement is accompanied by a cocktail of unexpected emotions: Anxiety about making a lifelong commitment. Sadness about leaving their single life behind. Confusion when even simple decisions—should we serve chicken cordon bleu or beef Wellington?—bring them to tears. Worst of all, since everyone around them expects them to be happy, few brides feel there’s anyone to turn to with these conflicting feelings.Written by one of Modern Bride’s “25 Trendsetters of 2006”—and targeting the 2.5 million women who get engaged each year—Emotionally Engagedis the only book geared toward helping brides survive their engagements and emerge as stronger, happier, better- adjusted married women. In the book, Allison Moir-Smith shares her threestage, tried-and-true process from her workshops and individual therapy sessions, along with the stories of over a dozen brides-to-be and newlyweds, helping readers transform their bridal blues into bridal bliss.Book Emotionally Engaged: A Bride's Guide to Surviving the "Happiest" Time of Her Life Review :
My fiance and I have a 10-month engagement and it has been an absolute roller coaster for me. I heard once that women start breaking up with a man six months before they actually do it. On the positive flip side, I think that men start the engagement process about six months before they actually pop the question. That's certainly the case for my fiance anyway. He's been rock solid, totally committed, better-or-worse since we got engaged (which also explains why he kinda got a little nutso a few months BEFORE we got engaged). Me? I've been doing a pretty good job of alternating between Fun Girlfriend, Nagging Wife, and Emotionally Unstable Woman. And I hate it. I hate it! I'm supposed to be happy and attending Bridal Shower Teas and frolicking through fields of rainbows and unicorns! Instead, I'm finding I have to go through this crappy transformative and transitional process. I'm a successful, independent woman! Why I so crazy?Thank God I found this book! It's a road map to handling that process from Girlfriend to Wife a bit more smoothly, gracefully, and lovingly. I missed being loving toward my fiance. Sad to say, but it's the honest truth. Some women may have an easier time transitioning into the role of spouse. Others, for reasons ranging from fierce independence to past hurts, will have a more difficult time figuring out just where she fits. If you're in that latter category, get the book. It's an under-$15.00 investment. I totally believe it's worth it.Practicalities:*This book makes no assumptions about your religious beliefs or sexual orientation, however I believe all situations/experiences presented are between male and female. It also makes no assumptions about your living arrangements, family dynamics, or employment situation. It presents a variety of situations and experiences with a common theme: everyone is trying to merge their lives with another person in a new way.*The book is not meant as a couple's book, but I have shared parts of it with my fiance as a way of explaining things I'm dealing with. If you're looking for a good couple's book/discussion guide, I recommend The Hard Questions.*The Kindle version works just as it should.*You will get the most value out of the book if you actually do the exercises.*I'm finding it very helpful to read the book more than once as I experience different levels of "processing."*Not every situation presented will apply to you - some people live together, some don't, some have very close families, some don't - but you will find value in reading others' experiences and outcomes.Good luck and congratulations! My engagement was an extremely unhappy one. This book is what got me through the family drama, the money drama, the cold feet. It helped me accept and understand the "AAAA GET OUT NOW!" feeling. It helped me decide whether I wanted to call off the wedding, or call off the marriage. Emotionally Engaged was an invaluable resource. In the end, it is what helped me to walk down the aisle, sure that I was doing the right thing. And the extremely unhappy engagement gave way to an extremely happy wedding day. I am so happy I married my husband, and I thank this book for helping me get there.UPDATED 2020: I should have listened to the “AAA GET OUT!” feeling. I had a happy wedding day and followed by an unhappy marriage to someone I never should have married. Trust your gut!!! Figure out if the wedding is the problem, or the person you are marrying. Maybe find a professional therapist and think about a longer engagement while you deal with your emotional stuff.
